As exhibit developer for Through the Lens: The Photography of Frank Muramoto, I helped shape an immersive narrative that brings to life the work of a Japanese-born photographer who ran a studio in Pueblo from 1915 to 1958. Featuring approximately three dozen of his photographs—ranging from candid nature shots and studio portraits to intimate scenes of local Japanese American life—I curated a display that explores how Muramoto documented the rich tapestry of southern Colorado through four decades of profound social change.
His images capture everything from everyday living and tight-knit community gatherings to moments of cultural preservation, including students attending a Japanese language school—offering a rare and inclusive visual archive of a once-thriving group, now dispersed by events like the 1921 flood and World War II incarceration. This exhibit, realized in partnership with the Pueblo City-County Library District, invites visitors to encounter southern Colorado history through Muramoto’s lens—and to reflect on resilience, belonging, and diversity through a deeply human perspective.
